Success
comes in cans not can’ts
This
slogan is written above the doorway of a local plant hire company near
where I live. I was struggling to think about what to write in this
newsletter and this sign set me thinking. It immediately reminded me
of Lewis Hamilton and something his father said about his winning the
F1 championship – you need support of family, dedication and hard work
– these are all cans. It costs huge sums of money and the Hamilton’s
lived on a council estate when he first became interested in racing.
Success comes in cans.
Also today
is November 5th – bonfire night. It also the day after
Senator Barack Obama was elected to be the 44th President
of the US. The world can change – I remember the 1960’s and the race
problems. Yet, 40 years on a black man is elected to the most powerful
position on the planet. Success comes in cans.

Influencing
|
 |
I have
been running a number of influences and persuading courses for a
client. Someone asked me what this means (and was I doing it to
them). The answer was no and it started me to think about the link
between success in cans and influence. The immediate connection is
how successful people don’t worry about concerns – they use
influence.
Stephen
Covey in Seven Habits of Highly Effective People introduced the
concept of Circles of Concern and Circles of Influence. At the
heart of the concept is moving from dealing with things we are
concerned about to working on things we CAN do.
