Many people are familiar with the SWOT analysis - strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats - for an organisation.
This simple exercise, asks individuals to ask the question,
"what is I was an organisation, what would be my SWOT?"
I use this exercise every year to develop my personal goals.
It takes very little time (30 minutes) and has helped me to
consider new business development and personal development/training
needs. It was this exercise that started my journey to setting
up my own company and the areas I specialise in.
Draw a large box and divide into further boxes and head each
one up as follows:

Now consider each dimensions and some questions to prompt
ideas:
|
Strengths
|
1. What do people say are my main strengths?
2. What competencies/skills do I possess?
3. Skills I love to use?
|
|
Weaknesses
|
1. What skills are holding me back in my career?
2. What feedback have on areas of weakness?
3. What skills do I avoid and should attempt?
|
|
Opportunities
|
1. What opportunities exist in your current situation?
2. How coudl you use your strengths more?
3. What changes are happening that you could exploit?
|
|
Threats
|
1. What changes could negatively impact you?
2. Are you avoiding something that won't go away?
3. How do your weaknesses hold you back?
|
Write the answers onto your SWOT diagram. Now ask yourself
- what insights has this brought? Now make a plan to do something
with this. Again develop your plan on paper. Because we have
to engage our brain when we write - our goals are implanted
into our sub-conscious and have a 90% chance of success.
I can't guarantee success, only your inspritation and perspiration
will do that. Good luck and let me know what happens. We shall
publish the best stories at a future time on the website.
